Today, on the Saturday before Easter, the day on which the body of Jesus Christ was laid in the tomb is commemorated.

Christians are making final preparations.

The feasts began with the evening of the Palms, and ended on Friday, when the “Prohodul Domnului” was celebrated in all places of worship.

Bells rang in the monasteries and churches of Iasi. It was as if they were calling people to prayer.

On Maundy Thursday, we chose to go to the “Golia” Monastery, an important settlement in the city. Many people find their peace here. The service started at 16:00.

On Maundy Thursday, reference was made to four special events in the Savior’s life: the washing of the disciples’ feet, as an example of humility, the Last Supper at which the Savior instituted the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, the priest’s prayer and the beginning of the passions through the sale of the Lord.

Specific to the Thursday denia are the reading of the 12 Gospels and the removal of the Holy Cross in the center of the church.

All those present at Goliath, before worshiping, kissed the Cross with Jesus Christ crucified.

When the priest read from the Holy Gospels, the parishioners lit candles and sat down on their knees.

At the end of the service, they bowed again, kissing the Cross and waiting to be blessed.

A few people remained to write poems and chat with the abbots who were listening to the ceremony from outside.

From what I have discussed with them, the ordinances of monasteries should not differ from those of churches. However, researching, I arrived at the “St. Nicholas” Parish in Popricani commune. A “country” church, where the elders “pull your sleeve” if you do not punctually respect all the orders of the day with such great significance. The service started at 18:00.

On Good Friday there was the commemoration of the shameful, terrifying and saving Passion of the Savior and the confession of the robber to the grateful one who gained heaven.

And because Good Friday is a liturgical day, the Holy Day was not celebrated.

In Denia, which started at 18:00, the Epitaph (a cloth representing the scene of the entombment of the Savior) was removed from the Holy Altar and placed on a table in the middle of the church. In front of the table was the Holy Cross, taken from Maundy Thursday.

The faithful kissed the Holy Epitaph and bowed, passing under the table three times, in memory of the three days in which the body of Christ sat in the tomb.

Further, the service of the Prohodium of the Lord was officiated (the priest, the church choir, but also the parishioners). Later it was surrounded (the children carried the ornaments – the Stars) and the church with the Holy Epitaph. On the floor, in the place, a white cloth was placed, marking the burial of Jesus. The priests placed the Epitaph on the Holy Table in the Altar, where it will remain until Wednesday, the eve of Ascension.

An interesting custom of the area was the giving of a roll, a cup of juice and a candle to each participant in the service. This would be an old custom by which the people of the church thank God for passing Holy Week well. The dead are not commemorated during Holy Week.

After the priest gave a speech, the parishioners were amazed.

Tonight, the Resurrection service begins. Arriving at the moment of the Resurrection, through his resurrection, Jesus Christ asks us to receive him completely, to receive his light.

The meaning of the Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays

On Monday, the Church reminded us of Patriarch Joseph who was sold by his brothers in Egypt. He is a foreshadowing of Christ, sold by Judas.

Also during the denia on Monday, the unfruitful fig tree was mentioned, cursed by Christ to wither because it had no fruit. It is understood from here that God means love and justice.

The ten virgins were commemorated on Tuesday. The candle without oil represents self-realization in total disregard for others. The oil candle represents godliness accompanied by almsgiving.

On Maundy Wednesday, the sinful woman who washed with tears and anointed the Savior’s feet with myrrh, before His Passion, was commemorated as a symbol of the repentance and correction of sinful man. At the same time, Wednesday is the day when Judas sold Christ to the Pharisees, for thirty pieces of silver.
