In a European study, air quality was measured in different cities. Romania can also be found on the map. Out of the 375 monitored cities, Bucharest, Cluj, Timișoara. Târgu Mureș or Iasi is around the 300th place in the list of the cleanest (unpolluted) cities in Europe.

Galati is on an honorable 21st place in the ranking of European cities with the cleanest air.

Cities are ranked from cleanest to most polluted city, based on average levels of fine particulate matter, or PM 2.5, over the past two calendar years.

Fine particulate matter is the air pollutant with the greatest health impact in terms of premature death and disease.

This tool focuses on long-term air quality, as long-term exposure to air pollution causes the worst health effects.

What are the cleanest cities in Romania? Only three of them provide an unpolluted environment

In 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) updated its health-based guidelines for air quality and recommended a maximum level of 5 μg/m 3 for fine particles for long-term exposure to protect health.

In 2008, the European Union (EU) set an annual limit value for fine particles of 25 μg/m 3 as part of policies to provide clean air in Europe.

The Ambient Air Quality Directive 2008/50/EC is currently being revised to, among other things, align EU standards more closely with WHO recommendations.

The viewer classifies air quality as:

good for fine particle levels not exceeding the World Health Organization’s annual guideline value of 5 μg/m 3 ,

correct for levels above 5 and not exceeding 10 μg/m 3

moderate for levels above 10 and not exceeding 15 μg/m 3 ;

weak for levels above 15 and not exceeding 25 μg/m 3 ; and

very weak for levels at and above the European Union limit value of 25 μg/m 3.

According to the measurements, the air is the cleanest in Galati, Sibiu and Oradea. The rest of the cities rank with a very high level of pollution. 375 European cities were monitored. The cleanest city in Europe is Faro (Portugal). Reykjavik is 7th, Stockholm 9th.

In Europe, we benefit from the most comprehensive air quality monitoring network in the world. The data comes from ground-based measurements of fine particles taken by more than 400 monitoring stations.
