Romania recorded the largest increase in life expectancy in 2023, compared to 2019, respectively by one year, according to the Eurostat report, published on Friday. Despite all the growth, Romanians’ life expectancy is still low. While at the level of the European Union, the average life expectancy is 81.5 years, in Romania it is 76.6 years.

The same document indicates that regarding the increase in life expectancy, our country is followed by Lithuania (0.8), Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg and Malta, each with an increase of 0.7 years.

The recent Eurostat report also shows that life expectancy increased in the European Union in 2023 by 0.9 years compared to 2022 and by 0.2 years compared to the pre-Covid period in 2019.

In contrast, Austria and Finland recorded the largest declines of 0.4 years, followed by Estonia and the Netherlands, with a decline of 0.2 years.

In the European Union, the highest life expectancy in 2023 is recorded in Spain, followed by Italy (83.8 years) and Malta (83.6 years).

At the opposite pole, in terms of life expectancy, Bulgaria (75.8 years), Latvia (75.9 years) and Romania (76.6 years) are placed.

In the European Union, the average life expectancy is 81.5 years. In 15 countries of the European Union, life expectancy exceeded the EU average.

In 2022, 3.88 million children were born in the EU. There is a slight decrease from 4.09 million in 2021. The number of children born in the EU has been decreasing since 2008, when 4.68 million children were born. Also in 2022, France had the highest total fertility in the EU (1.79 live births per woman), followed by Romania (1.71), Bulgaria (1.65) and the Czech Republic (1.64) .

In contrast, the lowest fertility rates were observed in Malta (1.08 births per woman), Spain (1.16) and Italy (1.24).

On January 1, 2023, the average age of the European Union population reached 44.5 years. This means that half of the EU population was over 44.5 years old, while the other half was younger. The average age of the EU population has increased by 2.3 years since 2013, when it was 42.2 years.
