Romania enters the Schengen area with air and sea borders from March 31, the policemen of Cluj descend on the streets with an application to check citizens’ data, occasioning fines of ten thousand euros.

Thus, in the context of Romania’s accession to the Schengen area with air and maritime borders, a new system for verifying identity documents, called eDAC, was operationalized at the level of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. With the help of mobile phones or tablets on which the application has been installed, it is possible in a very short time to scan the document presented by the verified person – identity card or passport – the eDac application automatically generating existing data in the databases belonging to the Romanian authorities , as well as those related to the Schengen area. Thus, on the night of March 30 to 31, the police officers from Cluj on duty went down the streets with mobile phones equipped with the new data verification system, legitimizing in one night almost seven hundred people – 687 to be exact – being verified through about 580 people through the eDAC application. Also, the police stopped 422 vehicles in traffic for checks and conducted 218 tests regarding the consumption of alcohol or prohibited substances while driving. The result – 89 contraventional sanctions, in the amount of more than 45,000 lei, i.e. approximately 9,000 euros, and four flagrant violations of the traffic regime on public roads were also found. Five drivers were left with a suspended license and in four cases the car’s registration certificate had to be withheld.
