Iulian Popescu, the prefect of Gorj County, today invited a delegation of the National Research – Development Institute for Earth Physics to our county, led by Mr. Constantin Ionescu, General Manager.

The working visit began with a trip to the field to identify the spaces where the new equipment relocated by the National Research – Development Institute for Earth Physics will be located in our county:

➡️ seismic station for locating earthquakes (at Tismana, Sohodol village)

➡️ sensor for monitoring the effects of earthquakes (at Târgu Jiu).

In addition to these new locations, 8 seismic stations for locating earthquakes are located in our county.

This was followed by a press conference organized at the Prefect’s Institution – Gorj county, in which the Institute’s specialists presented the conclusions of the research carried out last year, following the earthquakes in Gorj. We found out that our area is prestressed, and another important factor, triggering the earthquakes in the county, was the wave of seismic waves coming from Turkey, following the earthquakes produced at the beginning of February 2023.

In our county, from the beginning of 2023 until now, 4164 earthquakes with a magnitude between 0 and 5.7 degrees were detected, almost 84.4% of the earthquakes produced on the territory of Romania last year.
