The “Prison of Silence” in Romania becomes a tourist attraction

The “Prison of Silence” Memorial and the Educational Center on Communism in Romania will be built in Buzău County. The project will be born in the place of the former prison in Râmnicu Sărat, being designed by the Institute for the Investigation of the Crimes of Communism and the Memory of the Romanian Exile.

The proposal to erect the Memorial came as early as 2013, but the project was approved by the Government on April 25, 2024. The works will be carried out until 2026. The investment, worth 67.4 million lei, is mostly made with money from PNRR.

More precisely, of the total amount, 44 million lei are money from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. Thus, the former penitentiary will become the “Prison of Silence” Memorial, turning into a tourist attraction. It will be dedicated to the victims of communism in Romania.

Also, the educational center will mainly address young people who want to learn more about this dark period in the country’s history. The center will operate in a new building, “mostly underground”according to the project.

The building in which the former prison was located is over a century old, and rehabilitation works are needed. The activity here took place both during the interwar Romania and during the communist period.

The torturer Alexandru Vișinescu was the commander of the prison

Between 1901 and 1963, it was the place where criminals, and later political prisoners, members of the Legionary Movement were held. Political leaders, churchmen, considered “counter-revolutionaries” were brought into communism.

Before the 60s, representatives of the peasant elite were also imprisoned here, such as Ion Mihalache, Ilie Lazăr, Corneliu Coposu and many others. The prisoners were isolated, starved, beaten, deprived of medicine and lived in conditions that are difficult to describe. Many personalities found their end in the “Prison of Silence”.

Incidentally, the name of the prison comes from the harsh regime, considering that the inmates were not allowed to speak or make sounds. We remind you that the one who was commander in the period 1955-1963, the torturer Alexandru Vișinescu, was convicted of crimes against humanity. He died in 2018.
