“The draft emergency ordinance is in its final form at the Chamber of Deputies and we are waiting to see what types of changes are made to the proposed text. Let’s not forget the situation we are in with medical leaves. During the year 2023, we had 3,263,000 medical leaves, we had 24 million days of medical leaves granted and we spent 6.9 billion lei from the state budget. We are in the paradoxical situation where the one who is on medical leave receives more money than when he is at work. I repeat, we are not discussing oncological patients, we are not discussing maternal allowance and we are not discussing children who need care. It is natural to have such facilities, but this situation we are in now does not ensure the sustainability of the social health insurance budget”, says Marcel Boloş.

He did not estimate how much money the state has collected from this contribution so far.

“Our annual estimated sums are 600 million lei, which we collect. I repeat, it is not a tax on medical leaves, as is being circulated, it is the contribution to social health insurance, which is paid during the period of medical leave, as well as the contribution to pensions, which is paid throughout the period in which you are active at work . So, these things belong to reasons that have in mind a rational approach to the money we have in the social health insurance budget”, concludes Boloş.

The introduction, from January 1, of the 10% contribution for medical leaves was criticized by the opposition.
