At the “Mihai Eminescu” Central University Library, the opening of the “Universe in a book – encyclopedias” exhibition took place on Monday.
During the event, associate dr. Ioan Milică, director of the Central University Library, held the conference “Beyond words: ENCYCLOPEDIA”. “The exhibition “The universe in a book – the encyclopedias”, entered in the activity calendar of the Project “Restoration and rehabilitation of the historical monument building Central University Library “Mihai Eminescu” Iasi”, RO-CULTURE Program, financed by the EEA Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 , brings to the public’s attention the most important modern encyclopedias from different geographical areas: Larousse, Brockhaus, Britannica, Hispanica, Americana, Judaica, Italiana, etc. There is no shortage of Romanian encyclopedias published in the first half of the 19th century under the coordination of Diaconovici, Candrea, Gusti, Predescu: Enciclopedia Română (1898-1904), Illustrated Encyclopedic Dictionary “Romanian Book” (1931), Enciclopedia României (1938), Enciclopedia Cugetarea (1940)”, appears in a press release.
The encyclopedia is a systematized compendium of human knowledge, including information considered essential about all important subjects or only about those in a certain field. Being consulted rather than read, in printed or electronic format, general or specialized, addressing the general public or only a certain age group, encyclopedias are today indispensable for any information and documentation endeavor.
The exhibition organized by the Special Collections and Collections Conservation departments is open to the public from March 22 to April 30, 2024, in the exhibition space on the first floor of the Foundation Palace. The entry is free.
