The former 1 Mai gym in the center of Alba Iulia will be demolished. New parking spaces will be provided in the area.

And the former thermal power plant will be abolished, also with the same purpose, the two buildings being nearby.

Alba24 reporters were on the scene. From the pictures you can see the state of damage to the buildings.

The plans of the local administration were made public on Wednesday, by the vice-mayor Emil Popescu.

“In Alba Iulia, new parking spaces will be set up in a short time

The parking spaces will be set up on Frederic Mistral Street, in the immediate vicinity of the Court. It is about land on which there is a former thermal power plant,

as well as the ruins of the former 1 Mai gym which was engulfed, not too long ago, in a fire.

After the demolition of the respective buildings, the area will be sanitized, and the parking spaces I referred to, as well as a green space, will be located in the respective perimeter,” announced the vice-mayor, Emil Popescu, on Facebook.

The situation of disused buildings

The former 1 Mai gym was almost completely destroyed by the fire in November 2023. The flames would have spread from the fire started by people on the street. The building was already decommissioned. Before the incident, the local administration’s plans were to modernize the building.

The project regarding the demolition of the CT24 thermal power plant building was approved on March 26 by the Alba Iulia Local Council. The building covers an area of 253 square meters.

The plant was no longer used after disconnecting the tenants from the centralized network. In 2012, it was taken over by the Court, but in October 2023 the institution stopped using the building, investing in its own thermal power plant.
