Tonight is Earth Hour, the largest global environmental protection event. Earthlings are urged to turn off the light, to protect Earth’s resources. So that the light doesn’t go out, environmentalists and energy experts urge us to reduce electricity consumption not just once a year, but every day.

By Mădălina Chiţac on 23.03.2024, 20:15

All over the world, those who cherish the planet will turn off the lights tonight at half past eight.

  • Dan Trifu, vice-president of Eco-Civica: It’s an attention grabber, a lesson we all have to learn, that by the end of June – July we’re consuming the resources related to this year. If Romania turns off the light for an hour, other countries can live for several days with this saved energy.
  • Ciprian Cherciu, Association of Energy Communities: The hour of the earth can also be the hour of our pocket. Every hour we pollute less, we consume less.

Public institutions throughout the country will follow suit, including the Government and the Parliament. It will be dark in many homes for ecological reasons.

Each of us can help the planet every day through small gestures

  • Mădălina Chițac, Observer reporter: Even if the television is turned off but still plugged in, it consumes electricity. Besides, the biggest waste of energy comes from the fact that we plug in chargers or household appliances that we don’t use. If we unplug the equipment we don’t use, that means a 10% reduction in energy consumption.
  • Alexandru Mureșan, energy expert: Let’s use a lighting system based on LED sources. This lighting system consumes 7-10 times less than traditional lighting sources. We can use those motion sensors, which detect them when we enter or leave a room.

Smart thermostats can reduce consumption by 20%

National electricity consumption fell by almost six percent last year in the first 11 months, compared to the same period in 2022.
