Romania – Northern Ireland. Just 15 minutes before the start of the match, the FRF awarded the players of the national team from the ’84 and ’94 generations on the pitch.
The FRF offered special shirts to the former players of the national team. The football players from the ’84 generation, the first to reach the EURO in Romania’s history, were on the pitch, as well as those from ’94, who reached the quarter-finals of the World Championship.
Gică Hagi, awarded by Răzvan Burleanu
Among those present on the lawn was Gică Hagi, the former opponent of Răzvan Burleanu, the president of the FRF. “The King” was in Gică Popescu’s team 10 years ago, when “Baciul” was arrested before the FRF elections won by Burleanu.
A decade later, Gică Hagi and Burleanu met on the lawn of the National Arena. The FRF president handed the shirt to Hagi, and the two greeted each other politely and smiled.
They were on the field, from the generation from EURO 1984: Marin Dragnea, Ioan Andone, Gică Hagi, Silviu Lung and the children of Costică Ștefănescu.
And from the generation from CM 1994: Anghel Iordănescu, Miodrag Belodedici, Ion Vlădoiu, Corneliu Papură, Marian Ivan, Viorel Moldovan, Ilie Dumitrescu and, again, Gică Hagi. “The King” was the most applauded. The stadium erupted in cheers when his name was called.
