From a military point of view, it is a weak node that, if conquered, closes the land connections between the Baltic countries and the rest of NATO.

The Suwalki Corridor is the only land route connecting the Baltic States to mainland Europe. NATO considers this area to become a possible target for Russia, its control separating the Baltic States from its European allies.

Approximately 1,500 soldiers from Lithuania, Poland, the United States and Portugal participated in this exercise, which ended on Friday.

Especially for Lithuania, these maneuvers are a “warm-up” before the biggest exercise in its modern history, scheduled for this summer, in which approximately 10,000 Lithuanian soldiers and as many NATO soldiers will participate.

The possibility of a Russian attack against NATO has been increasingly evoked in recent months, in connection with the delay in US military aid to Ukraine.

After resuming that aid this week, Ukraine’s allies discussed strengthening aid to Kiev on Friday at a virtual meeting of the 50-nation Contact Group – the Rammstein Format.

During the meeting, US Secretary of State Lloyd Austin announced the sending of additional Patriot missiles to Kiev, but did not say anything about the launchers – which Kiev insists on.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine needs at least seven additional PATRIOT-type systems to ensure the defense of large cities against Russian air attacks.

On Friday night, anti-aircraft alarms rang out again across Ukraine.

Several explosions were heard especially in the southwestern regions.

The warning was quickly issued, but was later lifted in some regions after Russian Tupolev 95 (Tu-95) heavy bombers took off from an air base on the Kola Peninsula.
