Egyptian officials continue to have serious concerns about an Israeli invasion of the town of Rafah, which they believe could lead to a “massive attempt” to cross the border, prompting tens, if not hundreds of thousands, of Palestinians to enter the territory Egyptian.

An Israeli official confirmed that Israel was prepared to settle for the release of fewer than 40 hostages alive, as previously proposed, but that it would not agree to only 20 hostages being released, as Hamas had suggested in recent indirect contacts, the Times of Israel reports. Rather, the report states, Israel believes that Hamas is holding 33 live hostages who meet the so-called “humanitarian” designation — meaning women, children, men over 50 and the sick — and is insisting that they all be released.

The Israeli official said that Israel has warned that it will not agree to procrastination by Hamas, particularly its Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar, on the hostage deal in an attempt to prevent the IDF operation and mentioned that backup forces were called. “This is the last chance before we go into Rafah,” the official said, according to Channel 12 news. It’s “either a deal in the near future or Rafah,” the source said.

Sinwar, the architect of the October 7 massacre, is believed to be hiding in the Hamas tunnel network in the Rafah area, with hostages nearby as human shields.

Egypt’s intelligence chief, Abbas Kamel, went to Israel on Friday with a peace proposal from Hamas. The terrorists would agree to the release of 20 hostages in exchange for a three-week ceasefire, the renunciation of the invasion of the city of Rafah and the release of several Palestinian prisoners imprisoned for acts of terrorism. Meanwhile, Israel is fighting on two fronts and has bombed Hamas targets in Gaza and Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.
