Ukraine expects to receive the first F-16 fighter jets from its Western allies in June or July, a high-ranking Ukrainian military source said on Friday, reports the Reuters news agency, quoted by Agerpres.
Ukraine hopes these US-made fighter jets will help it counter Russia’s air superiority in the full-scale war launched by Vladimir Putin more than two years ago.
The military source cited by Reuters did not specify which country will supply Ukraine with the first batch of planes. So far, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Belgium have committed to sending F-16s to Ukraine, according to Reuters.
Kyiv air force spokesman Ilia Evlaş said this week that some Ukrainian pilots are about to complete their training on F-16s. Pilots and ground staff have been trained for months by Ukraine’s Western partners.
Until now, the Ukrainian military has had to rely on a relatively small fleet of Soviet-era aircraft.
