The armed wing of Hamas claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack on the Kerem Shalom border crossing between Israel and Gaza, Mediafax notes.
The armed wing of the Hamas group claimed responsibility on Sunday for an attack on the Kerem Shalom border crossing between Israel and Gaza, which Israeli and Palestinian media reported resulted in Israeli casualties.
The Israeli military said 10 projectiles were fired from Rafah in southern Gaza at the crossing, which it said was now closed to aid trucks for the Gaza Strip. Other crossing points remain open, Reuters notes.
Hamas’s armed wing said it fired rockets at an Israeli military base near the Kerem Shalom crossing, but did not say whether they were fired from Rafah.
More than a million Palestinians are sheltering in Rafah, near the border with Egypt.
Israel has vowed to enter southern Gaza City and eliminate Hamas forces from the area, but has faced growing international pressure not to do so because the operation would jeopardize humanitarian efforts for Gaza and could put many lives at risk.
Sunday’s attack on the Kerem Shalom crossing came as hopes for the ongoing cease-fire negotiations in Cairo dwindled.
