The Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Peter Szijjarto, who was in France on Thursday, expressed concern about the latest statements of President Emmanuel Macron, which he qualified as “threatening”, after the French head of state reiterated his point of view, in in an interview for The Economist, that sending Western troops to Ukraine should not be ruled out, reports Le Figaro, quoted by News.ro.

“If European or American soldiers set foot on Ukrainian territory, it will mean that we crossed a red line within NATO. If a NATO member state sends soldiers to Ukraine, it means that there will be a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia. This means a Third World War”, warned the head of Hungarian diplomacy, Peter Szijjarto, in an interview for the French station LCI, which will be broadcast on Friday.

Peter Szijjarto is also worried about the possible use of nuclear weapons in the Ukrainian conflict.

“Your president spoke about the installation of nuclear capacities (in Europe, no). Some of our neighbors asked the Americans to install nuclear weapons on their territory (allusion to Poland – no). We know very well that if one side or the other decides to use a nuclear weapon, it will be the end of the world,” said Szijjarto.

Hungary fears that “the war in Ukraine will increase”

As Ukraine’s neighbor, Hungary fears that “the war will escalate” with all these statements.

Instead of thinking about sending soldiers to the ground or using nuclear weapons or even talking about “new arms exports”, we should “end this war”, believes Szijjarto.

“A ceasefire must be declared and peace negotiations must begin. This is the only way to avoid another catastrophe,” he insisted.

Hungary, which has maintained relations with Moscow despite the war of aggression in Ukraine, declared itself against sanctions from the beginning, opposed the sending of weapons and hesitated for a long time to vote in favor of opening negotiations for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. He also vetoed a new 50 billion euro aid package from the EU for Kiev, but eventually relented, maintaining his pacifist rhetoric that is often interpreted as convenient for Vladimir Putin.
