What does sexsomnia mean?

According to a 2010 study, about 7 percent of adults surveyed had experienced sexsomnia at least once in their lives, while nearly 3 percent were currently living with the condition. These numbers point to an underestimated and often ignored issue in discussions of mental health and adequate sleep.

The mechanisms behind sexsomnia are complex and involve brain activation during deep sleep. Dr. Carlos Schenck, a renowned psychiatrist, explains that sexsomnia typically occurs during delta sleep, the deepest phase of sleep, when the body is paralyzed but the brain is activated. This disabling of mental control can lead to sexual activities without the individual’s full awareness.

“They occur most often during the slowest and deepest stage of sleep, called delta sleep. It’s like an alarm or trigger goes off in your central nervous system and you go from basement to rooftop in no time. Your knowledge is deeply asleep and you are not with the program, but your body is activated”Schenck said.

A complicated aspect of sexsomnia is the impact on partners, who can be confused and even traumatized by the other’s unconscious behavior during the night. For example, partners may be wrongly accused of sexual assault or may be exposed to sexual behaviors that cause them discomfort or anxiety.

Diagnosis and treatment of sexsomnia

The diagnosis and treatment of sexsomnia is difficult due to the lack of awareness of the affected person and difficulties in detecting automatic sexual behaviors. However, there are treatment options that include medication, behavioral therapy, and education about sleep hygiene and relaxation techniques.

Some doctors recommend clonazepam. It is a drug used for epilepsy, restless legs syndrome, and panic disorder that can successfully control unwanted sexsomnia for many, but not all.

Dr. Jennifer Mundt, an assistant professor of sleep medicine, psychiatry and behavioral sciences, emphasizes the importance of education and stress management in treating sexsomnia. Behavioral approaches can help reduce symptoms and improve sleep quality for those affected.

Sexsomnia is an embarrassing and often underestimated sleep disorder that can have serious consequences for mental health and interpersonal relationships. By raising awareness of this condition and seeking effective treatments, affected individuals and their partners can find relief and support in managing this sensitive issue.
