After being decommissioned from its air force, the future delivery of F-16 Fighting Falcons to Argentina and Ukraine has achieved a remarkable feat: it has simultaneously provoked two enemies of the US – China and Russia.

In a bid to arm its aging air force, Argentina earlier this month signed a $300 million contract with Denmark to purchase 24 F-16 jets.

Commenting on the sale, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said: “In close cooperation with our allies, we donated 19 F-16s to Ukraine’s fight for freedom, and now we have sold 24 to Argentina, in a process good that has created valuable links between our two countries.”

Following the sale to Argentina, Denmark’s ambassador to Ukraine, Ole Egberg Mikkelsen, confirmed this week that the country will transfer the rest of its fleet of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine by the summer.

The Danish ambassador said: “Don’t worry. There will definitely be planes for Ukraine. It’s our entire fleet of F-16s, which are now retired because we’re getting a new generation of F-35s.”

The statement has far-reaching consequences for two adversaries of the United States: Russia and China. China has lost the fight against the F-16, with Beijing also wanting to supply planes to Argentina.

Russia will prepare to face these F-16 fighter jets in combat in the skies of Ukraine.

China lost to the F-16

The F-16s were able to “shoot down” the JF-17 fighter jets jointly produced by China and Pakistan without firing a single missile.

The Argentine Air Force had been exploring options to acquire a new fighter jet for decades. However, the nation’s precarious financial situation prevented these attempts.

From the beginning, the Chinese-Pakistani consortium that produces the JF-17 fighter jets hoped to win a contract from Argentina.

Argentina’s announcement of the purchase of F-16s from Denmark closed the discussion of a possible purchase of the JF-17 multirole fighter. This is significant given that Argentina’s Embassy in China had announced just last month that Argentina was considering the purchase of JF-17 fighter jets.

China’s JF-17 Block-III aircraft, which was offered to Argentina, boasts sophisticated electronic and flight control systems, as well as an Active Electronic Scanned Array (AESA) radar. The aircraft is capable of launching Chinese air-to-air missiles such as PL-10, PL-12 and PL-15. This gave China high hopes for a possible sale.

Some observers believe that the decision in favor of the F-16 represents the effects of the rivalry between the great powers US and China in South America.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a multirole fighter aircraft originally designed by General Dynamics and improved by Lockheed Martin for the United States Air Force. It was originally designed as a light fighter aircraft.
