Forensics made a robot portrait of the victim, Patricia Kathleen McGlone PHOTO: Cold Case Squad, NYPD

New York detectives have identified the remains of a woman found buried in cement 20 years ago. Strangely, in solving the case, the police were helped by a victim of the 9/11 attacks.

Police believe the woman, who for two decades was known as the “Midtown Jane Doe,” is Patricia Kathleen McGlone, a teenager from Sunset Park, Brooklyn, who was last seen in the late 1960s. Her skeleton was found by construction workers in Manhattan in February 2003.

Detective Ryan Glas of the NYPD’s Cold Case Squad finally got a lead in McGlone’s case after years of sustained effort that included forensic and genealogical investigations and the use of modern technology. DNA traces were matched to that of a woman killed on September 11, 2001, whose first name was also Patricia, according to NBC New York.

“Now we can begin the next phase of the investigation – finding the killer”said Glas.

McGlone was between the ages of 17 and 19 when she was allegedly strangled to death with an electric cord, wrapped in a rug and then buried and covered in cement in the basement of the building that once housed a famous rock ‘n’ roll club – The Stages, where legends such as Jimi Hendrix played and which was closed in 1969.

McGlone’s body was discovered when workers broke through a concrete slab in the building’s basement and discovered a human skull. Inside the “tomb” was a wristwatch, some children’s toys and a signet ring with the initials PMcG.

In 2003, the investigation led to no results, given that forensic technology at the time was limited. But recently, new discoveries in the field have been used.

“I used investigative genealogy to produce that family tree”, said Glas. Then his team interviewed the people in the family tree. All leads on the paternal side were fruitless, but after officers turned their attention to the maternal side, a 90-year-old woman was found in Florida who turned out to be a distant cousin of “Midtown Jane Doe” .

She recalled her sister taking care of younger cousins while she lived in Brooklyn, with DNA testing suggesting one of those cousins was “Midtown Jane.”

Ultimately, investigators obtained other evidence that led to the definite identification of the remains.

Glas studied public and church records in Brooklyn to find out what happened in McGlone’s short life. Thus it was found that she attended Catholic school and then was in high school for only 8 days, because she married a man of about 30 years in 1968 or 1969, after which she disappeared.

Now detectives are trying to identify McGlone’s killer.

Glas said the teenager’s mystery husband was connected to the building where her body was found. “We’re still working to get information on him, trying to find out what the situation is. At this point in the investigation, what I can say is that he has a connection to where she was foundGlas stated.

The investigation continues under the direction of the Manhattan District Attorney’s office.
