Claudia de Albuquerque Celada, a 23-year-old young woman originally from Brazil, but settled in the US, chose serious health problems and a hard fight for her life. It all started with a soup, her friends claim.

The Brazilian was paralyzed after contracting a potentially fatal bacterial infection. Claudia was in Aspen, Colorado when she started experiencing trouble breathing, dizziness and seeing double. In just 24 hours, all her muscles were paralyzed, and she ended up living only connected to a ventilator.

It took doctors two weeks to find the cause of these problems: botulism, a rare but extremely serious disease caused by a toxin released by a bacterium. These bacteria only multiply in environments where there is no oxygen. This makes certain food sources, including canned food, a perfect breeding ground. In the absence of prompt treatment, the infection leads to the release of botulinum toxin that causes paralysis, severe breathing difficulties and even death.

A canned soup could be to blame for the young woman’s serious health problems

Local authorities told the Daily Mail that a canned soup could have been the source of the infection.

Luisa, Claudia’s sister, wrote a few words about the young woman on Instagram. Claudia had moved to Colorado in November for her dream job. She also told how quickly her health deteriorated one day. “She took a shower, ate dinner and went to bed, but she was already having trouble breathing, seeing and was dizzy. She sent a message to her friends to come to the apartment, but they only saw the message in the morning. When they arrived, my sister was already feeling much worse. She could barely breathe and her face was paralyzed, and shortly after that she was 100% paralyzed.” Luisa Albuquerque told a Portuguese publication.

Claudia stayed in the hospital for 50 days, and her recovery will take between six months and a year. The family created a fundraiser to pay her medical bills, and the medical facility where she was admitted offered to cover the cost of her transportation home to Brazil. Even after treatments and recoveries, it is not known if her life will ever be the same again.
