Over 90,600 multinationals operate in Romania, of which more than 90,000 are controlled from abroad, according to a report by the National Institute of Statistics (INS). Comparatively, the number of resident enterprise groups, which belong to Romanian entrepreneurs, is only 6,036. Most foreign companies are active in the field of trade, which makes Romania predominantly an outlet market. Germany, France and the USA occupy the first places in the groups of enterprises outside the country.

According to a report by the National Institute of Statistics, Germany, France and the United States of America occupy the first three places in the top countries that control subgroups of enterprises in Romania. Official data show that, in 2022, 96,705 business groups were operating in our country, of which 6,036 resident business groups, with Romanian entrepreneurs, which represents only 6%, and 90,669 multinational business groups (606 controlled from within, respectively, 90,063 controlled from abroad).

From the total number of multinational enterprise groups controlled from abroad and identified in Romania, 14,553 are groups controlled by foreign legal entities, and 75,510 are groups controlled by foreign natural persons. Most of the enterprise groups in Romania are active in the field of trade, reports INS.

“In 2022, the distribution of Romanian enterprise groups by economic activities, at the level of CAEN sections, shows that most of them carry out their activity in: section G – Wholesale and retail trade; Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles – 32% of the total group of enterprises; section F – Construction – 12% of the total group of enterprises; section M – Professional, scientific and technical activities – 10% of the total group of enterprises; section C – Manufacturing industry – 10% of the total group of enterprises and section L – Real estate transactions – 8% of the total group of enterprises”, states the INS report.

29% of Romanian employees, employed by multinationals

At the same time, the groups of resident enterprises are mainly active in the following areas: section G – Wholesale and retail trade; Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles – 18%; section F – Construction – 11%; section M – Professional, scientific and technical activities – 11%; section C – Manufacturing industry – 10% and section S – Other service activities – 8%.

On the other hand, in Romania, in 2022, a percentage of 29.2% of the total number of employees in active enterprises carried out their activity in enterprises that are part of multinational groups controlled from abroad. According to the INS, in the year 2022, a percentage of 21.7% of the total number of employees worked in the groups of multinational enterprises controlled in the first 10 countries. Compared to the share of the number of employees, most subgroups of enterprises in Romania are controlled from Germany, France and the United States of America. In the next places are Italy, the Netherlands, Great Britain and Austria.

Austria, high profit, few employees

The results of 2022 indicate that, depending on the share of the number of employees, the subgroups of enterprises controlled by legal entities or natural persons from Germany (18.1%), France (11.2%) and the United States of America are in first place America (9.3%), Italy (8.4%), Holland (7.3%) and Great Britain (5.8%). Austria, although it has some of the most profitable businesses in Romania, has an employee share of only 5.3%. Depending on the share of the number of employees in the total groups of multinational enterprises controlled from abroad, subgroups of enterprises controlled from Germany predominate in section C – Manufacturing industry (9.3%), in section G – Wholesale and retail trade; Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (3.3%) and in M ​​– Professional, scientific and technical activities (2.9%). Regarding the subgroups of controlled enterprises in France, 4.5% of employees are found in section C – Manufacturing industry, 2.3% are found in section G – Wholesale and retail trade; Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, and 1.4% are found in section J – Information and communications. Subgroups of controlled enterprises in the United States of America have the most employees in section C – Manufacturing (3.8%) and section J – Information and communications (2.8%).
