Russia has warned that Poland could become the target of a Russian attack if NATO were to deploy nuclear weapons on the country’s territory. The aggressive statement belongs to the deputy foreign minister of Russia, Sergei Ryabkov, for the state news agency TASS.
The official stated that NATO’s joint nuclear missions near the Russian border will be considered a threat to Russia’s security.
“All those politicians who discuss such an option in Poland and abroad should understand: any step in this direction will not add to Poland’s security, and the relevant installations will inevitably be a target. And these will be in the foreground in our military planning,” the deputy declared, notes Sky News.
The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister’s statement comes after Polish President Andrzej Duda announced on Monday that Poland is ready to accommodate weapons nuclear weapons of NATO if the Alliance so requests.
“If there was a decision by our allies to deploy nuclear weapons, as part of nuclear sharing, and on our territory to strengthen the security of NATO’s eastern flank, we are ready,” Duda declared.
