The solution was proposed by Khalil al-Hayya, a senior political official of Hamas, in an interview for Associated Press (AP), published on Wednesday. The proposal comes as months of cease-fire negotiations have stalled, and the suggestion that Hamas would disarm appeared to be a significant concession from the militant group that has formally pledged to destroy Israel.
Speaking to the AP in Istanbul, al-Hayya said Hamas would accept “a fully sovereign Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and the return of Palestinian refugees in accordance with international resolutions” along the pre-1967 borders of Israel.
The official stressed that if this happens (the establishment of an independent Palestinian state – no), the military wing of the group will dissolve.
However, such a measure is unlikely to be implemented by Israel, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to crush Hamas following the deadly October 7 attacks that sparked the war.
The solution of the existence of two states is supported by the international community, but the leadership of Israel rejects this option, AP notes.
The October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel killed an estimated 1,200 people. To date, the answer later, the Israeli army killed more than 34,000 people in the Gaza Strip, and several countries around the world criticized Israel for these actions.
