Why Pakistan, the only Islamic country with nuclear weapons, is not intervening in the Gaza conflict

--

Pakistan has invested significantly in missile development programs.

Contrary to the expectations of many OIC member states, which oppose the actions of the Jewish state and even its presence in the Middle East, Pakistan has adopted a position classified as passive towards Israel, generally limiting itself to supporting the well-known “two-state” solution.

The country that once threatened India with its nuclear weapons is being criticized for refraining from taking a stand when Israel said it would completely destroy Gaza, and the wider Islamic community is wondering where its much-vaunted “Islamic bomb” is. Pakistan while Islam faces a serious challenge.

Iran claims that Pakistan has no real control over its own nuclear weapons

An active member of the OIC and the most vehemently anti-Israel state, Iran says it understood long ago that Pakistan’s claim of an “Islamic bomb” was just “a hoax without substance” and that Pakistani authorities “are not in real control of the device”.

Obviously, Iran has also used this justification to frantically pursue a nuclear capability, while Israel is determined to prevent its materialization as much as possible.

Moreover, Tehran charges that while Israel has continuously fought to curb Iran’s nuclear program and previously destroyed similar efforts by Iraq and Syria, it has never threatened Pakistan with any military action, even when Islamabad was very close to producing the bomb. .

Iran also accuses the US of turning its back on Pakistan’s nuclear program, which for Tehran is evidence that Pakistan’s nuclear trajectory is aimed at India, with a green signal from both Washington and Tel Aviv.

India had to carry out the Pokhran-II test in utmost secrecy, while no restraint was required for Pakistan’s first nuclear test, Tehran claims in an attempt to highlight a dual position of the international community, particularly the US, on this topic.

Pakistan-Israel relations

Although Pakistan does not have diplomatic ties with Israel, there is a close understanding and even a high level of trust between the authorities of the two countries.

The two states have held secret meetings on security issues since their foreign ministers met publicly in 2005, and Israeli media have revealed that, “since at least 2012,” Pakistani intelligence services have been using spy technology produced by companies from Israel, the company Cellebrite being mentioned.

Also, in March this year, information about possible direct trade links between Pakistan and Israel appeared on social networks. However, these were categorically denied by the Pakistani authorities, who referred to a third party involved in the commercial transactions.

Malaya Lodhi, former Pakistani ambassador to the UN, draws attention to the fact that it is not the right time to display such a course of foreign relations between the two countries and recalls that “Pakistan has been a firm supporter of the Palestinian cause”, which “would like to see a de-escalation of the conflict”.

It must be said that there is still a strong far-right current in Pakistan, which, after the harsh Israeli reaction to the attack by Hamas terrorists on October 7 – resulting in the killing of approximately 1,200 Israelis and the capture of several hundred others, including women and children – is demanding the adoption of a hard positions towards the Israeli state.
