The Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Krisjanis Karins, said on Wednesday that the financing of the multiannual fund of 100 billion euros intended to support Ukraine, proposed by the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, could be ensured by the contributions of the member states of the Alliance.

Each member country would contribute a certain percentage of GDP, the Latvian minister stated before the NATO ministerial meeting in Brussels, according to Reuters, taken by Agerpres.

For his part, the Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna announced that his country proposed to the other NATO member countries to offer 0.25% of their GDP annually as military aid to Ukraine.

At this meeting, the foreign ministers from the NATO member states will discuss ways to put the military aid offered to Ukraine in the war with Russia on a long-term basis, an approach that includes Stoltenberg’s proposal to establish a fund of 100 billion euros within a five-year financing.

“We need to ensure reliable and predictable security assistance for Ukraine in the long term, so that we rely less on voluntary contributions and more on NATO commitments. Fewer short-term offers and more long-term commitments”, reasoned Stoltenberg.

According to some diplomats, one purpose of the initiative to create this special fund is to prevent any reduction in American aid to Ukraine in the event that Donald Trump becomes US president again.

The proposal will be discussed at the ministerial meeting, but a consensus is needed among the 32 member states of the Alliance.

Jens Stoltenberg also mentioned that the objective is to take a decision at the NATO summit in July.
