A number of Ukrainian military officers, who fought under the former commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, gave a grim assessment of the situation on the ground as Russia takes control. They declared, for politicalthe fact that the delay in Western aid to Ukraine could lead the country to a collapse of the front lines, as the Russian army has recently achieved several conquests, including the city of Avdiivka.

The officers said, on condition of anonymity, that there is a high risk that the front lines will collapse where the Russian generals decide to focus their offensive. Also, according to them, taking into account the intense attacks of the Russian army on the Ukrainian infrastructure, Russia will probably be able to “penetrate the front line and collapse it in some parts”, they said.

“There is nothing that can help Ukraine now because there are no serious technologies that can compensate Ukraine for the large mass of troops that Russia is likely to throw at us,” one senior military source told POLITICO.

During the interview, Ukrainian military officials emphasized that the mistakes of the Russian army on the front do not constitute a strategy for the Ukrainian army to rely on. In addition, they emphasize that there is a great need for soldiers on the front, contrary to the statements of the new commander-in-chief, Oleskandr Sîrskîi, last week, when he stated that the Ukrainian army will no longer need as many men as previously thought.

One of the military officials pointed out that Russia is not only increasing its forces on the battlefield, but “learning and improving” on the go.

Last week, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskymade a new appeal to the West to speed up the delivery of military aid to Kiev, warning that the Ukrainian army will have to prioritize its resources on the front.

“If there is no support from the US, it means we don’t have air defense, we don’t have Patriot missiles, we don’t have jammers for electronic warfare, we don’t have 155 millimeter artillery shells,” Zelenskiy said in an interview for The Washington Post. “It means that we will return, we will withdraw, step by step”, he added.
