The Israeli army admitted on Wednesday that it made “a serious mistake” by killing seven humanitarian workers of the World Central Kitchen (WCK) organization during an attack in the Gaza Strip, reports AFP, reports Agerpres.

This tragic event “was a serious mistake,” Israeli Chief of Staff General Herzi Halevi said in a video message. This should not have happened,” he added.

“We share from the bottom of our hearts the mourning of the families (of the victims) and of the entire World Central Kitchen organization,” continued General Halevi. “An independent body will investigate the event in depth and report its conclusions in the coming days,” he announced.

The United States-based WCK, one of the few NGOs still operating in the nearly six-month-old war-torn Palestinian territory, announced it was suspending operations in the region after Monday night’s attack in Deir al-Balah.

According to WCK, the victims are three Britons, an American-Canadian, a Pole, an Australian and a Palestinian.

Since the beginning of the war, WCK has participated in humanitarian operations providing meals in the Palestinian territory, where most of the approximately 2.4 million inhabitants are threatened by starvation, according to the UN. It helped send the first aid ship from Cyprus through a maritime corridor to the Gaza Strip in mid-March.
