More than a year and a half after Savannah Graziano was fatally shot by several agents in San Bernardino, east of Los Angeles, images have emerged showing the film of the authorities’ intervention.
The teenage girl’s father, Anthony Graziano, kidnapped her, after killing her mother the day before, on September 21, 2022. Images filmed from a law enforcement helicopter capture the pursuit of the man, on board a car traveling at over 175 kilometers per hour.
During the pursuit, several shots were fired from the van containing the teenager and her father. Finally, the car enters a variant of a highway, in the opposite direction, and stops in the bushes.
In the images, you can see how the girl gets out of the car, from the passenger seat, and goes to an agent who urges her to come closer: “Come here! Come to me! Come, come, come (…), go, go, go, go”.
In parallel, a radio message from the helicopter warns the agents on the ground about the presence of the teenager. “The girl is outside (…). She’s outside, on the passenger’s side”, are the messages sent from the helicopter.
In the video recording, the teenager first crouches down for a few seconds, after which she gets up and walks towards the police group. A gunshot is then heard, and the voice over the radio communications says “Oh no!”. “Stop!”, the agent calling the girl also shouted to his colleagues. “Stop shooting. He’s in the car.”
Savannah Graziano died at the hospital from her injuries, and her father was killed at the scene during the intervention.
The authorities did not reveal the names of the agents involved. An investigation is underway.
Law enforcement interventions that take a fatal turn are quite common in the United States. According to an independent assessment by The Washington Post, over 1,100 people were killed by the police in the last 12 months.
