The former president of Chinese Football Federation, Xuyuan Chenwho admitted to accepting bribes, was sentenced to life in prison as part of a large-scale campaign targeting the king sport in China.

Chen took advantage of his position to illegally “accept” sums of money from various people, amounting to 81.03 million yen (10.4 million euros), according to the People’s Daily, quoted by Agerpres.
A court in Hubei province (central China) sentenced him to “life imprisonment for accepting a bribe, deprived him of his political rights and confiscated all his personal assets”.
The bribe Chen received was “huge, and his actions had serious consequences for Chinese football”according to the same source.
The trial of the former Chinese football manager (67 years old) took place in an ominous context for Chinese football, with a weak national team, ignominiously eliminated from the Asian Nations Cup, as well as an image of a corrupt sport.
Xuyuan Chen was at the helm of the Chinese Football Association, the state body that manages football and serves as the sports federation, between 2019 and 2023.
