The fair of girls on Hen Mountain was, in the old days, beyond an opportunity to find a life partner, an opportunity to share stories and legends, one of which was related to the fairy who distributed golden eggs to poor girls.

The legend of the fairy and the golden eggs on Hen Mountain

Thus, on Mount Găina, located near the Aries River, it was said that there lived a fairy of unprecedented beauty, who lived her life in a shining palace.

Next to the fairy was a hen with golden feathers, which laid 3 golden eggs each day. The fairy got her hands on these eggs, which she then distributed to poor girls who were about to get married.

Three fools, who had heard about the fairy’s hen and the golden eggs, began to disguise themselves in women’s clothes, after which they entered the palace and stole the bird and three golden eggs, according to albapress.ro.

In their haste, the golden eggs escaped from the basket, which broke into the Aries river, their fragments scattering in its sand.

The legend also made its place in Romania’s biggest outdoor event, at the Girls’ Fair on Mount Găina.

The fair had a “warm-up” stage

The girls’ fair was initially a meeting between the villagers of Vidra and Bulzești de Sus, who wanted to find a life partner more easily. But as it continued to be held, it began to gain notoriety, the number of participants increasing year by year. Thus, the first official attestation of the fair dates back to 1816, but its origin is much more distant.

The fair had a “warm-up” stage where the boys came on Saturday evening to sing and drink brandy. On Sunday morning, the girls and wives would show up, and the party would begin right on the crest of Mount Găina.

The folk dance was the “eliminatory test”, where the boys sifted the dancing girls from the limping ones, after which the families sat around the table to negotiate the marriage. The boy’s father had an important role in the more or less diplomatic process.

At the end, if the two families agreed on the marriage of the two, the girl was placed on a balancing board, at the end of which the dowry was placed, according to apuseni.info.
