The woman died who was in a serious condition after, at the beginning of April, she underwent an endoscopy intervention at a private clinic in Craiova. The police in Dolj are investigating for manslaughter and state that there is suspicion of a case of medical malpractice.

Officially we know that it is about a 52-year-old woman from Caracal, who went into cardio-respiratory arrest following an intervention performed by a surgeon from Craiova.

“The police officers of the Dolj Criminal Investigation Service were alerted to the fact that, on the evening of April 4, a 52-year-old woman from the municipality of Caracal, Olt county, allegedly went into cardio-respiratory arrest following an intervention of endoscopic exploration, performed by a man from the city of Craiova, a surgeon. In the case, investigations are being carried out to establish the exact circumstances in which the event took place, and legal measures will be ordered”, IPJ Dolj informed.

After the bronchoscopy, the woman was resuscitated and admitted in serious condition to the Intensive Care Unit of the Craiova County Emergency Clinical Hospital, but later died.

According to the police, following the evidence administered so far, corroborated with the preliminary medico-legal conclusions, as well as the suspicion of a case of medical malpractice, the investigations will be continued under the aspect of committing the crime of manslaughter. For now, on the fact, not on the surgeon.

The local press writes that the intervention was done by Dr. Alin Demeterian, at a private clinic.

Alin Demetrian was manager of the Craiova Emergency County Clinical Hospital and head of the Thoracic Surgery Department, being one of the best-known surgeons in Craiova.

Now he is accused of having made fatal mistakes in the interventions.

In January, the same doctor was sent to court for manslaughter.

“On 13.09.2019, as the main operating physician, performing his duties at the Craiova County Emergency Clinical Hospital, as a result of non-compliance with the measures stipulated for the exercise of the medical profession, the specialty of thoracic surgery, Demetrian Alin -Dragoş improperly performed a Carlens-type anterior cervical mediastinoscopy on the BD patient during which he accidentally severed the patient’s right brachiocephalic trunk, causing a massive external hemorrhage that led, on the morning of 09/14/2019, to violent death of the patient, between the medical act performed by the defendant and the death of the patient, there is a direct causal link”, according to the prosecutors from the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Craiova District Court.

In addition, the doctor is being investigated for “committing, in similar circumstances, three other crimes of manslaughter as a result of medical negligence”.

The doctor is under judicial control. After the case of the patient from Caracal, the prosecutors asked to replace the judicial control with another, more drastic preventive measure.

The Craiova District Court rejected the request, considering that the doctor Alin Demetrian would not have violated the provisions of the judicial control, which forbade him to operate only in cases that were directly related to the four patients who died, writes Adevărul.
