The Ballon d’Or trophy won by Diego Maradona, after being named the best player at the 1986 World Cup, will be auctioned in France on June 6, the Aguttes auction house announced on Tuesday.

This is the first Ballon d’Or to be auctioned, reports Reuters.

Maradona, who died in 2020, won the trophy presented by France Football after leading Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title in Mexico.

The two goals scored by Maradona in the quarter-finals of the 1986 World Cup against England remain in the memory of many football lovers.

A goal was scored with Maradona’s fist, a success that the former Argentinian footballer called “the hand of God”. The second goal was scored after Maradona started from his own half and beat five English players. It was considered the “goal of the century”.

The shirt that Maradona wore that day, along with the ball from the match, have already been sold at auction.

The Ballon d’Or award was introduced at the 1982 World Cup, and its list of winners includes the Italian Paolo Rossi, the Brazilians Romario and Ronaldo, the French Zinedine Zidane, as well as Maradona’s compatriot Lionel Messi.
