Klaus Iohannis is being welcomed to the White House today by the President of the United States, Joseph R. Biden, Jr., according to the announcement of the Presidential Administration.

The meeting between the two presidents is a recognition of the very good relationship between Romania and the USA and further proof of the fact that President Biden considers President Iohannis an important European leader and Romania a solid European ally of the United States of America.

The visit of President Klaus Iohannis to the USA is a good opportunity to reaffirm Romania’s role as a security provider in the area and an active actor within the North Atlantic Alliance.

According to the White House, during today’s meeting, the two leaders are celebrating the 20th anniversary of Romania being a member of NATO.

“President Biden thanks President Iohannis for hosting American soldiers in Romania and appreciates the many contributions that Romania, a reliable NATO ally, makes to the security of NATO’s eastern flank, especially in the Black Sea region,” the Press Secretary said Karine Jean-Pierre regarding President Iohannis’ visit to the White House.

“A special place in the exchange of opinions between the two heads of state will be occupied by the situation in Ukraine and the Black Sea basin, as well as the strengthening of security in the Euro-Atlantic space.

The high-level dialogue will be a good opportunity to raise the profile of the Strategic Partnership with the United States and reconfirm the privileged bilateral relations between the two states and multi-sectoral cooperation.”

President Klaus Iohannis will also receive a highly prestigious international award, the Distinguished International Leadership Award, at the Atlantic Council gala on Wednesday in Washington.

Career recognition

The Atlantic Council of the USA has decided that for the year 2024, it will award this award to the President of Romania, as a recognition of his career and his role as a transatlantic and European leader. The Atlantic Council has so far honored four US presidents – including current President Joe Biden, during his time as Vice President.

President Klaus Iohannis is the first European head of state honored with this distinction, in the 24 years since the award was established, according to the Presidential Administration. The Atlantic Council is a prestigious American “think tank” organization, founded in 1961, with a rich activity in the field of international affairs.

Annually, the Council awards a limited number of personalities who embody the essence of the transatlantic relationship and who have contributed to its consolidation, in all its dimensions (political, economic, security and defense, art, humanitarian activities, etc.).
