After the Easter holidays, drivers in Romania face fuel price increases, which adds additional pressure on individual budgets.

Recently, premium petrol and standard diesel rates have increased by about two paise per litre, escalating costs at the pump to an alarming level.

Details of petrol and diesel prices

As of May 6, 2024, the price of a liter of premium gasoline varied between 7.89 and 8.13 lei, while standard diesel is sold for between 7.32 and 7.42 lei per liter. These price adjustments reflect an upward trend that directly affects consumers.

Prices for standard petrol, premium diesel and LPG, on the other hand, remained unchanged since the end of last week. Thus, a liter of standard gasoline costs between 7.37 and 7.48 lei, premium diesel between 7.67 and 7.91 lei, and LPG between 3.42 and 3.45 lei.

According to the data aggregated by peco-online, today, May 7, 2024, standard gasoline fluctuates between 7.32 lei at Petrom, respectively 7.33 lei at Lukoil and 7.5 lei at Rompetrol, respectively 7.48 lei at Mol. As for standard diesel, it ranges between 7.27 lei at Socar, 7.29 lei at Rompetrol and 7.42 lei at Rompetrol, the variations being smaller than for gasoline.

The economic context and its impact

Price increases are partly influenced by the dynamics of oil prices on the global market. Recently, oil prices have fallen, registering a significant reduction of more than 6% in the last three months. However, fluctuations are not always directly or immediately reflected in pump prices due to the complexities of the supply chain and fiscal policy, including the level of state-imposed excise duties.

Consumer insights and reactions

This increase in prices has stimulated interest in greener and less expensive transport alternatives. In big cities, electric bicycles and scooters are gaining ground as viable options for daily commuting, reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuel-powered automobiles.

Experts in the field anticipate that fuel prices could remain stable or even fall slightly in the coming months, depending on developments in the global oil market and domestic economic policies. However, the situation remains uncertain, and drivers are advised to closely monitor developments in order to effectively manage the costs associated with transport
