NPPC Advocates for US Pork in Taiwan Trade Talks

In recent developments, the US and Taiwan engaged in another round of trade negotiations as part of the US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade. NPPC Vice President of Government Affairs, Maria C. Zieba, represented the US pork industry in these discussions held in Taipei.

The negotiations addressed unresolved issues from the previous agreement, including agricultural trade barriers such as border inspections, country-of-origin labeling (COOL) regulations, and restrictions on the feed additive ractopamine.

Zieba emphasized the significance of facilitating trade and market access while advocating for science-based agricultural trade practices during a public stakeholder session organized by the USTR.

NPPC expresses support for agreements with Taiwan under the US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade, provided that Taiwan eliminates barriers hindering US pork exports. Despite Taiwan’s substantial population and preference for pork, US pork exports to the country remain relatively low compared to other markets.

The US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade, initiated in June 2022, aims to strengthen economic and trade relations between the two nations, fostering innovation and economic growth. The outcomes of these negotiations could establish precedents for future agreements and significantly impact trade dynamics between the US and Taiwan.
