A tragic accident took place on Sunday, May 5, in Galati, right on the city’s seafront, where a 41-year-old policeman lost his life. He was driving a motorcycle that crashed into a Mercedes car, driven by a 25-year-old driver who did not give way.
Special Actions police officer, killed in a motorcycle accident
According to the authorities, the policeman from Special Actions was riding on the seafront in Galati on a motorcycle, together with a 34-year-old woman. When a Mercedes car, driven by a 25-year-old driver, turned without giving priority, the policeman could no longer avoid the impact, being thrown onto the asphalt together with the young woman he was driving with.
Cristian Laurenţiu Jalbă, the 41-year-old policeman, was rushed to the emergency unit of the county hospital, but the doctors could not do anything to save his life. The accident occurred on Easter Day, around 3:00 p.m.
“On May 5, 2024, at 2:52 p.m., the Galati County Police Inspectorate was alerted by calling SNUAU 112 regarding the occurrence of a road accident on Marea Unire boulevard in the city of Galati, resulting in the bodily injury of two people.

From the preliminary investigations, the police officers from the Galaţi Road Bureau established that a car, driven by a 25-year-old young man from the municipality of Galaţi, while traveling on the said street in the 1st traffic lane, with the direction of travel from Portului street towards Cloșca boulevard, after passing Viva Park and arriving in front of a church, he would have performed the turning maneuver, at which point he would have collided with a motorcycle traveling in the same direction on lane 2 and which was driven by a 41-year-old man from the municipality of Galati”it is stated in the IPJ Galati press release.
Doctors could not save his life
According to the authorities, following the impact between the motorcycle driven by the 41-year-old policeman and the Mercedes car, both people on the motorcycle were seriously injured. The doctors on the ambulances that came to the scene of the accident started the resuscitation maneuvers on the spot.
“As a result of the impact, two people who were on the motorcycle at that time were injured, it is about its driver who was seriously injured and a 34-year-old woman.
The medical crews from SMURD Galati and from the Galati County Ambulance Service who intervened on the scene performed resuscitation maneuvers on the injured man, after which he was transported to the hospital in an unconscious state. According to the quoted source, the driver of the Mercedes car had not consumed alcohol, the result of the breathalyzer test being negative. Now, the police have opened a criminal case for personal injury to determine the culpability in this case.
“The driver has a valid driver’s license, and when tested with the breathalyzer, the result was negative. In the case, a criminal case was opened for the commission of the crime of bodily injury due to negligence, and during the investigations, the circumstances in which this road accident occurred will be established accurately.” it is also stated in the IPJ Galati press release.
