Happy Birthday! Today is another holiday
On the first Sunday of May we celebrate Mother’s Day. And in 2024, the holiday is celebrated on May 5, the same day as Orthodox and Greek Catholic Easter. Google is marking Mother’s Day this year with a special doodle.
Mother’s Day is celebrated in our country, since 2010, on the first Sunday of May.
It was established by Law 319/2009, at the same time Father’s Day was established, which is celebrated, since 2010, on the second Sunday of May. The initiative for the establishment of these two holidays was taken, in June 2009, by the Anti-discrimination Alliance of All Fathers (TATA), together with a group of parliamentarians.
According to this law, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of May and Father’s Day on the second Sunday of May. The role of this initiative is to emphasize the importance of each of the two parents in family life and in the child’s universe.
According to the statement of reasons, “the distinct celebration of the two parents will provide the opportunity to highlight the importance and fundamental role of the mother and the father in raising and educating their own children, demonstrating that the two parents are complementary”. Also, Family Day was set for May 15.
Mother’s Day is a holiday in honor of mothers and motherhood. This is, however, usually celebrated on the mapamond annually on the second Sunday of May. About 90 countries of the world therefore have another common date for this holiday, the second Sunday in May.
However, other countries also celebrate the mother on the first Sunday of May. Spain, Hungary, Portugal, Lithuania, but also countries like Mozambique, Angola, the Republic of Cape Verde. Until a few years ago, Romania unofficially celebrated Mother’s Day on March 8, which is actually International Women’s Day.
