Economica.net – New discount in gas stations, today. Diesel has become cheaper than petrol

The Petrom station on Virtuții Street in Bucharest, monitored by us this year, displays on April 27, 2024 a price of standard gasoline of 7.39 lei/liter, while the price of standard diesel is 7.36 lei/liter .

So, today, the oil company reduced the price of diesel by five pennies per liter, while maintaining the price of gasoline, a situation that we will probably see at the other fuel distribution chains in Romania.

This is after yesterday Petrom reduced the price of diesel by three pennies per liter, the same way, without changing the price of gasoline. And yesterday’s cheapening came three days after the previous price drop. At that time, the oil company reduced the price of diesel by four pennies per liter and lowered the price of gasoline by two pennies per liter. Three days before the price reduction since then, there was another one, when only diesel was cheaper, by six pennies per liter.

So, after four consecutive price reductions this month, diesel became cheaper than gasoline, a rare situation in Romania.

Romania, a country in which three refineries that produce fuels operate, is a net importer of diesel, but a net exporter of petrol, given that diesel is the majority fuel used. For this reason, but also for other reasons, diesel is generally more expensive here than gasoline, a different situation compared to many European markets.

Today’s situation, when diesel became cheaper than gasoline, was also encountered, for a short time, last year. Thus, at the end of May 2023, after several years, diesel fuel was sold cheaper than gasoline in Petrom gas stations, after several successive reductions. This after even in the autumn of the previous year, the price difference between the two fuels was very large, in favor of diesel – diesel was also 1.5 lei per liter more expensive than petrol.

As I explained in the text in which I announced yesterday’s price reduction, the decrease in diesel prices at the pump is not only manifested in Romania.

Diesel margins fell, at least in Europe, for a fifth week in a row and reached a ten-month low, amid an oversupply of diesel in Europe that, at least for now, would not see demand growing in the same rhythm. The saturation of the European market was greatly facilitated by the resumption of deliveries from India, with volumes increasing by 2.7 times in March compared to the previous month.
