An Iranian revolutionary court has sentenced well-known Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi to death on charges related to the 2022-2023 unrest in Iran, his lawyer told Iranian newspaper Sharq on Wednesday.

The Revolutionary Court charged Salehi with “assistance to revolt, gatherings and collusion, propaganda against the system and calling for riots,” the singer’s lawyer said.

The Iranian judiciary has not yet confirmed the sentence. Salehi has 20 days to appeal the decision.

Salehi was released on bail on November 18, Raisian’s lawyer said at the time after an “initial sentence” of six years in prison. The rapper was arrested again less than two weeks later.

In the months of unrest that followed Amini’s death on September 16, 2022, hundreds of people were killed, including dozens of policemen, and thousands more were arrested.

Iranian officials called the protests “riots” and accused Tehran’s foreign enemies of causing the unrest.
