All this after the French authorities failed to reach an agreement with the air traffic controllers to avoid them going on strike, Reuters and AFP inform, quoted by Agerpres.

More than 2,000 flights have been canceled and another 1,000 are at risk of having to change their route to avoid French airspace. France’s Civil Aeronautics Authority (DGAC) asked airlines on Wednesday to cancel 75% of flights scheduled for Thursday at Paris Orly Airport, 55% of flights from Paris Charles-De-Gaulle Airport and 65% of flights from Marseille-Provence.

Low-cost airline Ryanair says it has been forced to cancel more than 300 flights, including from Britain to Spain or Italy, as a result of the strike, calling on European Union officials to put more pressure on France.

Risk for the Paris Olympics

SNCTA, France’s largest union of air traffic controllers, announced on Wednesday that it had called off the strike planned for April 25 after reaching an agreement with the management team on working conditions, but it came too late to avoid disrupting air traffic. The discussions with the other unions, however, remained on hold, according to the French Civil Aeronautical Authority.

Airlines fear air traffic controller strikes could pose a risk to the Paris Olympics if enough pay deals are not agreed in advance. Over one million travelers are expected to arrive in Paris during the Olympic Games.
