The governing coalition between the Scottish National Party (SNP) and the Scottish Greens at Holyrood has ended after a bitter row over abandoning climate targets.

Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf threw out the coalition agreement between the SNP and the Scottish Greens, known officially as the Bute House Agreement, on Thursday. The SNP is now expected to go ahead as a minority administration.

The deal, authorized in August 2021, allowed the Scottish Greens to have two junior ministers. Greens co-leaders Lorna Slater and Patrick Harvie performed the duties and were filmed leaving the Bute House residence earlier on Thursday.

Reducing carbon emissions

Tensions between the two parties rose after the Scottish Government scrapped plans to cut Scotland’s carbon emissions by 75% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.

Yousaf – who has been pressured by some in his own party to scrap the deal amid a series of other political disputes – called an emergency cabinet meeting on Thursday morning aimed at addressing growing disagreements between the two parties.

The Scottish Greens were due to vote on whether to abandon the deal, with Harvie saying he could not remain leader if members approved the withdrawal.

The SNP holds 63 of Holyrood’s 129 seats and is expected to continue as a minority administration until the next Scottish parliamentary election in 2026, POLITICO reports.
