The first Romanian cherries have appeared, but their price remains quite high for many of us. In recent years, their cost has generated heated discussions and even jokes on social media.

In the agricultural markets, the first Romanian cherries have already appeared. However, customers pass the stalls, look at the prices and don’t stop. Some are amazed, while others say that such prices have never been seen before.

The first harvest of cherries this season was brought to the Cibin market in Sibiu, on Wednesday, April 24, around noon. According to turnulsfatului.ro, the fruits were available at two traders in the market.

Compared to last year, when the kilogram of cherries reached 100 lei, the price has increased this year. Those from Turkey are sold for 250 lei per kilogram, and those from Greece are sold for 150 lei per kilogram.

In Constanța, two weeks ago, the price of cherries was 250 lei per kilogram, but now it has decreased and they are advertised as being on “super offer”, according to the producers.

An internet ad presents Romanian cherries as a “seasonal product, ecologically certified”, available at “only” 68 lei/kg.

For those who do not want to spend large amounts, there is also the option of purchasing cherries “by the piece”. In the seaside town, cherries are also available by the piece. Thus, a single cherry can be purchased for 2 lei.

A person from Constanta published on a social networking site an image of the fruits of the season, specifying that he sells them for only 2 lei/piece. The comments of netizens were not slow to appear, with cherries again becoming the main topic of the banks. “Very good to look at!”, “At this price they’re sure to be filled with…meat!”, “I’d eat them with bread to fill me up for a year”were just some of the comments.

What is the opinion of the fruit growers about the cherries in the markets

According to fruit grower Marius Roman, the fruits currently available on the market are not Romanian cherries. The founder of the Roman Nurseries adds that the Romanian cherries will be available only in a few weeks.

“Romanian cherry fruits do not appear on the market earlier, there is no variety that matures in commercial plantations earlier than May 15-20. Indeed, for example, they can still ripen after May 5-6 in family gardens, i.e. where a microclimate is created between the buildings, and some extra-early varieties can ripen 5-10 days earlier than they ripen in the orchard. There we are not talking about the sale of cherries, but about own consumption”explained engineer Marius Roman, according to profit.ro.

The fruit grower also points out that the cherries found in the markets are imported. In Romania, the number of cherry plantations that reach maturity at the end of April is extremely low, as they require significant investment.
