Investigators were stunned by how the three acted: two women who pretended to be interested in providing him with home care drugged the old man with an anesthetic spray, then, together with a man, stole everything they found of value in the house.

“The woman drugged the victim with a spray, the old man fell to the ground with quite serious injuries. A safe with around 30,000 euros and other valuables was stolen,” said Afonso DAvino, chief prosecutor of Parma province.

Taken to the hospital by a nephew who found her in the house, the assault victim told investigators what happened, but could only vaguely describe the two women.

The investigation proved to be arduous as law enforcement viewed surveillance footage from the area and searched both the old man’s home and the suspects’ homes for fingerprints, biological evidence and any other clues.

Finally, the Carabinieri arrested the Romanians after the DNA on a cigarette found at the home of one of them proved identical to a sample taken from the victim’s home.

“The persons were unknown. Thanks to a parallel investigation, we were able to make them suspects. During the searches, we found and confiscated a significant amount of money,” Vito Franchini, Fidenza carabinieri commander, said.

The three Romanians, two women aged 23 and 35, respectively, and a man also aged 35, were accused of aggravated theft and are now in custody in Parma prison.
