The accident happened around 10 am, near the airport in Fairbanks, a city located in the center of the state, in the northwest of the American continent, according to a statement issued by the Alaska police.

A World War II plane crashed 10 minutes after takeoff

The plane, with “two people on board”, crashed “into the Tanana River”, less than ten minutes after take-off.

“We specify that the plane fell on a steep hill on the bank of the river, where it burst into flames. No survivors were found,” the police emphasized.

An image provided by authorities shows burning trees along the frozen riverbank, with the wreckage of the plane barely visible in the middle of the landscape.

The plane was a Douglas DC-4, a model developed during World War II that has been out of production for over thirty years. Currently, it is mainly used for the transport of goods.

According to the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the plane was performing a fuel transfer flight. The agency has started an investigation in this regard.
