Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova threatened on Friday that Russia would respond if Ukraine strikes Russian territory with weapons received from Britain. The reaction comes after the British Foreign Minister, David Cameron, gave the green light to the Ukrainians to use British weapons against targets inside Russia.
Zakharova accuses the West of waging “a covert war against Russia through the hands of Ukrainians.”
“Here we see a very dangerous tendency of escalating tension in official statements. This is a cause for concern for us. It is the first time that a Western politician admits with such frankness what for a long time has been a well-known secret for most countries of the world: that the West is waging a hidden war against Russia through the hands of the Ukrainians”, she commented, according to News.ro.
Russia will respond if Ukraine launches strikes against Russian territory with British weapons, Zakharova added.
“How irresponsible and insensitive do you have to be not to realize what such statements lead to, especially regarding countries with nuclear weapons?” Zaharova also said during a press briefing.
“We always respond, but how can you not think about the feelings of British subjects and EU citizens?”, she asked herself indignantly.
And Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described Cameron’s comments as dangerous. “This is a direct escalation of the tension around the Ukrainian conflict, which could represent a potential danger for European security, for the entire European security architecture,” he threatened.
Cameron’s comments put Britain in a tougher position on Russia – at least publicly – than the United States, which stipulates that any weaponry it supplies to Ukraine should only be used within its internationally recognized borders. Ukraine and not against targets inside Russia.
Ukraine says it uses its own drones and other weapons to launch attacks against targets inside Russia, such as oil refineries or rail infrastructure.
