The director of the Gjirokastër Police, explained the dynamics of the accident and revealed that around 2:20, the patrol of the Këlcyre police station spotted a vehicle traveling at a very high speed. The driver did not respond to the police signal to stop and turned towards Përmet.

A police crew started chasing the car and the driver accelerated trying to escape from the agents.

Due to the speed, some sources say it was almost 200 km/h, the vehicle, a Mercedes Benz 240, left the road and flew into the bed of the Vjosë river, about 80 meters. Some of the victims were thrown from the car, two were found trapped between the beasts crushed by the gravel in the bed.

A few hours after the accident, the authorities began transporting the bodies to the morgue in Tirana.

According to the leaders of the police and the prosecutor’s office, the accident is the result of migrant trafficking. Foreign citizens often use this road axis as a springboard to EU countries.

The seven people who died on Tuesday were from countries in the Middle East, writes an Albanian journalist, and were going to reach Montenegro, from there to Croatia and further to countries in central Europe. They had each paid 300 euros just to cross Albania.
