The bodies of two of the six people reported missing after the collapse of the Francis Scott Bridge in Baltimore City have been recovered. The other four people are presumed dead, the American authorities announce. The ship was carrying containers of hazardous materials, and some of these were cracked.
The victims, a 35-year-old man from Mexico and another 26-year-old man from Guatemala, were part of a construction team repairing the bridge when the “Dali” ship hit the bridge pillar.
The two were in a pickup truck that fell into the water and got stuck at a depth of more than 7.5 meters, among the metal and stone debris, the Maryland State Police said.
Scans by sonar vehicles indicate that there are still vehicles in the water, stuck in the collapsed structures. More than 1,100 engineering, construction and special operations specialists provide support to local, state and federal water debris removal agencies.
The National Transportation Safety Board has recovered the data from the ship’s on-board recorder, but says that investigations could take up to 2 years, notes The Guardian.
The ship was carrying 56 containers of hazardous materials, which contained 760 tons of corrosive, flammable substances and various materials, including lithium-ion batteries. Some containers have been cracked, say US officials, who have identified some leaks in the waterway.
