The flowers mark the beginning of Passion Week, which ends a week later with the feast of the Resurrection. Palm Sunday marks, year after year, the Lord’s entry into Jerusalem, on a donkey, greeted with flowers, olive and palm branches by thousands of people and hailed as a true king with the words: “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”.

This feast is one of the most important feasts of the year, representing the only time when the Savior accepted to be hailed as king.

What to do with willow branches, de Florii

The willow actually replaces the olive and fennel branches, which are not found in Romanians. On this day, a different Liturgy is held than the one celebrated on other Sundays. On the other hand, according to a legend, the willow bridged a river for the Mother of God, helping her to continue her journey.

As thanks, the Virgin Mary granted sanctity to the willow tree. Nowadays, Christians collect willow branches that they take to the church to be consecrated by the priests, then they place them at the icons, to protect everyone in the house from diseases.

Others attach them to the entrance door, to protect their home, or they also wrap their waists with them, being convinced that in this way they drive away pain. In some areas, they are put under the pillow by older girls before going to bed, believing that they will become more beautiful and get married that year.

They are also put on fruit trees and vines, so that they bear more fruit, or on beehives, so that the bees are blessed. Those who grow hemp try to break willow branches as long as possible, so that their hemp will grow tall.

  • First of all, given that on Florii there is an indulgence in fish, it should not be missing from your holiday menu.
  • Do not wash your head, because you will turn white before time. If absolutely necessary, use only holy or enchanted water.

The one who partakes of the Flowers has a great chance of having whatever wish he puts in his mind fulfilled, when he approaches the priest.

In Banat and Transylvania, older girls put a mirror and a clean shirt under a grafted hair. After sunrise, they are taken and can be used in love and health charms.

As the weather will be on Florii, so it will be on Easter, they say in the country.

Whoever washes his head today must do so only with sanctified and sanctified water, otherwise he risks turning white like trees in bloom.

The housewives bake pies which they give as alms to the poor.

Today the nettles bloom, but they are not good to eat, also signifying the approach of the end of the Easter fast. That is why the Feast of Flowers is also called the “Wedding of Nettles”.

The Feast of Flowers, the name day for all those baptized after flowers, has deep roots in history. During the time of the Romans, it was dedicated to the Goddess Flora. Later, the Christians turned it into the day of the beginning of preparations for the Lord’s Resurrection, linking it to the Lord’s entry into Jerusalem.

Girls who want to meet their soul mate should boil basil in water at midnight and wash their head with it, then pour it at the root of a flowering tree before sunrise.

It is good that on this day the clothes should be aired, the objects in the house should be dusted, and the girls should take their dowries outside in the sun to attract their bear.

Big girls from Banat and Transylvania put a mirror and a clean shirt under a grafted hair. After sunrise, they are taken and used as talismans for love and health.
