Artificial intelligence startup and conversational “bot” creator ChatGPT may launch an AI search engine that could compete with Google next week, according to sources cited by Reuters.

Sources claim that the search engine could launch on Monday, May 13 ahead of the Google I/O 2024 developer conference.

The web search feature would be built into ChatGPT and include citations for answers, according to The Verge, citing Bloomberg. Additionally, the search engine could be “based in part on Bing,” according to The Information.

ChatGPT previously allowed the installation of plugins through which the chatbot could search for information on the Internet, which were later replaced by the GPTs store, which I wrote about on StartupCafe.ro.

The artificial intelligence bot is in continuous development, adding new functions such as memory or the possibility to use the chatbot without an account.

What is OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT

Elon Musk, Sam Altman and other entrepreneurs founded OpenAI in 2015, an organization to study and combat possible risks related to the widespread use of artificial intelligence in the future.

Musk left OpenAI because he did not agree with partners on development plans. On the other hand, Sam Altman remained at the helm of OpenAI, holding the position of CEO.

So far, Microsoft, venture capital fund Khosla Ventures and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman’s foundation have invested in OpenAI. OpenAI released the ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) “bot” in November 2022.
