There are two mandatory criteria to consider when answering this question: Which TV is best for me? Should I choose a Sony TV, a Philips TV, an LG TV or…which one?. Screen size and screen type. Of course, there are other parameters to take into account, but these two criteria are basic. Let’s take them one at a time!

Screen size: A key factor in choosing a TV is the screen size. This is generally expressed in inches and corresponds to the length of the diagonal, not including the TV frame. To get the most out of your TV, you need to define the distance between it and the position from which you watch it. For a less demanding viewer, this distance is generally equivalent to three times the diagonal length of the screen (in cm). To define it, multiply the measurement (in inches) by 2.54, then by 3.

Example: 43″ TV.

43 * 2.54 * 3 = 327 cm or 3.30 m

To calculate the screen size best adapted to the size of your living room, divide by three the distance between your seat (sofa, armchair) and the TV. This quick calculation will give you an idea of the screen size (in cm) most suitable for an average viewer.

Of course, these are just measurements and should not necessarily be taken literally. True TV and movie fans, on the other hand, will prefer a shorter viewing distance, which is achieved by multiplying the screen size by two instead of three, or even by multiplying by 1.2. This distance, which corresponds to that used in cinemas, will literally put you in the center of the action.

Screen type: Plasma screens and regular LCD screens with fluorescent lighting are a thing of the past. Today, all TVs are equipped with an LCD-LED screen, which is thinner and more energy efficient. All models from major brands use LED or OLED technology with UHD (4K) resolution. LED screens also include technologies specific to the TV manufacturer LG such as QLED, NanoCell, QNED, etc. OLED screens are even more expensive, although their price has come down significantly lately. 4K screens have become the norm, with the high-end 8K starting point.

Which brand is the best? Sony TV, Philips TV or LG TV?

First of all, you need to know exactly what you want from a TV, whether it’s a Sony TV, a Philips TV or an LG TV. The purpose of this article is not to discuss a specific brand, so we do not have a favorite brand. We judge TVs on their own merits, regardless of the manufacturer’s reputation.
